Alabama Nylon Flag

Alabama Nylon Flag

Available Sizes: 12×18 in, 2×3 ft, 3×5 ft

The flag of Alabama is a reminder of the Confederate Battle Flag used during the Civil War. The current flag was adopted in 1895 and is a crimson cross on a white field. Although it is square, law does not lay down the dimensions. The state governor’s flag is almost identical, except for carrying the state seal in the top triangle and the state crest, a boll of cotton, in the lower one.

In 1927 the competition to design a flag for Alaska was won by 13-year-old Benny Benson who got his inspiration from Alaska’s northerly position. The flag shows the large North Star with the Great Bear below it. When Alaska was given statehood in 1959 the flag remained the same. The stars are the yellow color of natural gold and the field is the same blue as appears on the Stars and Stripes. The width of the flag to the length is in the proportion of 125: 177. The diameter of the North Star is one-tenth of the width and the stars of the Great Bear are three-fifths the diameter of the North Star.

Arizona was entered into the United States in 1848, after the Mexican War, but did not have a flag until 1911. The territory’s Adjutant General, Charles Harris, designed a flag and it was made official in 1917. Harris indicated that his design was meant to show the sun setting over the desert with the central star symbolizing the main mineral found in the state, and the blue lower half representing the United States.

The flag of Arkansas is also a reminder of the Confederate Battle Flag with its blue diagonals and white stars and was created by one of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Miss Willie Hocker. The three blues stars in the center represent the three states that were created from the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, Arkansas included. The blue star above first appeared in 1924 and represents Confederacy. The twenty-five white stars are a reminder that Arkansas was the twenty-fifth state to be entered into the Union. The red, white, and blue colors of the flag represent both the Confederacy and the tricolors of France.  Arkansas is the only state to have diamonds, which is the reason for its diamond shape in the red field. In 1967 the diamond was officially declared the state gem.

The current flag of California is meant to be a recreation of the original Californian flag that was lost in the devastating earthquake of 1906. California was without a state flag until 1911. The grizzly bear that appears on the white field is now extinct but in 1846 would have been an ideal symbol of ferocity. Adopted in 1849, the grizzly bear also appears in the state seal.

When Colorado entered the Union in 1876 it was known as the Centennial State or the Columbine State, so the red C can stand for either of those names or for the state itself. For many years Colorado was ruled by Spain, the name meaning red. Like Arizona, the red and yellow recall the Spanish colors. The Rocky Mountain Columbine is blue, white, and gold so these colors are reflected in the flag. The gold can also represent the founding of Denver following the gold rush of 1858.

The Connecticut flag, which is among one of the most ancient flags, was originally used during the Revolutionary War when Connecticut troops used this seal on their flag. The flag consisting of a blue field with the arms in the center was officially adopted in 1895 after pressure from the Daughters of the American Revolution. On June 3, 1897 it was regulated that the arms should be in color in the center of a field of azure blue. The flag was originally supposed to be “squarish” but further regulations in 1957 said the flag had to have proportions of 2: 3.

Delaware Nylon Flag

Delaware Nylon Flag

Available Sizes: 12×18 in, 2×3 ft, 3×5 ft, 4×6 ft, 5×8 ft

The 1777 coat of arms on the Delaware flag consists of a soldier and a farmer supporting a shield with a wheatsheaf, an ear of corn and an ox representing Delaware’s agricultural foundation. A ship in full sail symbolizes Delaware’s status as a maritime state; the blue and bluff correspond to the colors of the Revolutionary War uniform. The diamond was added after the flag was adopted in July 1913. The date on the bottom of the blue field symbolizes that Delaware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
